These services each specialise in a particular area of employment support and have their own referral systems. They include employment and volunteering support for people with learning disabilities.

Ashford Place

Ashford Place offers independent advice and guidance on topics including welfare benefits as well as careers advice, CV workshops, job preparation, work placements and in-job support. Eligibility: Age 16-65, looking for employment. Referral: Self or by treatment team. Brent Start

Brent Start offers:

  • courses including beauty, health and social care, business and ICT and languages;
  • vocational training including accounting and IT;
  • skills for life; and
  • traineeships for people aged 19-24.

Business in the Community

Business in the Community Ready for Work works with companies to offer pre-placement training (employability and workplace skills), unpaid work placements, and job coaches and a job club to give support after placement. Eligibility: People who are, or are at risk of becoming, homeless. If at risk, they must have other significant barriers to work. Referral: Self, online (ring or email for a login).

Jobcentre Plus offers one-to-one job search support for a year. Eligibility: Unemployed and looking for employment.

Learning disability employment and volunteering support

  • Choices4all, which offers training in catering and hospitality, life skills, literacy, numeracy and IT, employability skills and independence. Eligibility: Age 18 or over. Will need a passport or birth certificate; letter confirming eligibility for Income Support or Incapacity Benefit; 139A assessment form; statement of Special Educational Needs and (if over 25) a personal budget.   • Toucan, which supports people to find and keep appropriate jobs. Eligibility: People with mild to moderate learning disabilities. Referral: Anyone, by email.   • Langdon, which helps with writing CVs, approaches employers and sets up work placements or jobs. Cost: £50 per day, one day a week for 26 weeks. Eligibility: People with mild to moderate learning disabilities who are nearly ready for work and live in Edgware, Borehamwood or Hendon. Referral: Anyone, by phone.   • People with learning disabilities can also get help from Jobcentre Plus, which can additionally put them in contact with:
    • Remploy, which offers support with searching and applying for jobs, work trials or training to build employment skills. A job coach will provide support and guidance after you start work. To be eligible you need to be aged 16-25 and have a Statement of Educational Needs (SEN) or equivalent.
    • Shaw Trust, which supports unemployed people develop skills for work, including coaching and job search help.
  • Educational support from the CNWL Recovery and Wellbeing College, the College of North West London and the City Lit.

Lift

Lift provides training and pre-employment services including: online job searching; writing a structured CV; filling out application forms; linking you with local employers offering work placements and paid employment; and A Chance 2 Work, their training programme. LEAP

Leap offers a two-week course of support and training, access to vacancies, apprenticeships, volunteering opportunities, two years' follow-up after work placement, IT and numeracy classes, counselling and carer advice.

Eligibility: Unemployed, aged 16-24, with good spoken English. Available between 09:30 and 17:00 for the two-week course.
