Core Psychiatry

CNWL holds the Lead Provider contract of the North West London Core Psychiatry Training Scheme with Imperial Health Care NHS Trust.

North West London Core Psychiatry Training Scheme

The North West London Core Psychiatry Training Scheme consists of two sectorised schemes of 118 Core Psychiatry training posts:

  • 62 posts based at Charing Cross
  • 56 posts at St Mary’s

These are spread across two Local Education Providers – us, CNWL, and West London Mental Health Trust.

Trainees on the scheme are allocated an Educational Supervisor who will meet with them on a regular basis to provide an overview of their training as well as pastoral and enhanced support. The trainee will also have an allocated Deputy Educational Lead who will be available to provide advice and further management on any training issues.

Supervision

Trainees will have weekly one-to-one, one-hour supervision with an approved consultant trainer. The focus of this should be around learning and be led by the trainee. The trainee will be expected to complete a portfolio of evidence including workplace based assessments and reports, which will be used in preparation for the Annual Review of Competency Progression (ARCP). There is a regional MRCPsych course which is organised by the Lead Provider and trainees are expected to attend on a regular basis.

Specialties

These posts cover all the specialties of psychiatry such as General Adult Psychiatry, Older Adult Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMHS), Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability (PID), Liaison and Forensic Psychiatry, as well as many sub-specialties such as Eating Disorders, Addictions and Psychotherapy.

Rotation

A typical rotation would consist of ‘core’ experience in the first year across general adult and older adults, inpatient and community. Specialty experience would be gained in the second and third years and should include CAMHS or PID as well as the opportunity for other sub-specialties. Posts are allocated for the first 12-18 months on entry to the scheme and then subsequently taking into account trainee preference.

Improving the scheme

We are constantly looking at ways to improve the scheme and value feedback from trainees. This has led to the development of a Professional Skills Academy with bespoke modules in Management Training for Core Trainees as well as a comprehensive Communication Skills Development course, which have been very well received with positive feedback.
