Eating disorders research and development

FREED-up

Investigator: Professor Ulrike Schmidt and co-researchers (King’s College London)

FREED-up is an exciting research study exploring whether rapid treatment helps improve outcomes for individuals recently diagnosed with an eating disorder. FREED-up is a large-scale project taking place at a number of eating disorders services around the UK, including Vincent Square, and is supported by South London and the Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, King’s College London, The Health Foundation and B-eat.

Experiences of the internal “eating disorder voice”

Investigator: Dr. Matthew Pugh (Senior Clinical Psychologist, Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist)

Many people with eating disorders describe experiencing an internal “eating disorder voice”. Led by Matthew Pugh, Vincent Square is currently running a number of studies exploring this phenomenon. These include research exploring how the voice is related to the maintenance of eating difficulties, where the voice originates from, and how professionals can work with this aspect of eating disorders.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Investigators: Bethan Dalton (King’s College London)

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a safe, non-invasive brain stimulation technique that has shown promise in improving some of the core symptoms of anorexia nervosa. Vincent Square is supporting a trial of TMS, led by King College London, which is investigating the effectiveness of this intervention and its mechanisms of action.

Mental Health Research Network

The Mental Health Research Network (MHRN) is part of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). Its mission is to help make research about mental health happen within the NHS in England. Here at Vincent Square, we work closely with the North London Hub of the MHRN and have helped support numerous studies in this way, including studies by Professor Janet Treasure from the Institute of Psychiatry.
